This project is a private residence located in St Kilda West, a suburb of inner city Melbourne. The project is sited at the rear of a subdivided 1970’s terrace housing project. Through scale and proportion, the building references the grandeur of the Victorian Terrace houses, which are scattered throughout the area. The design draws inspiration from the volumes generated by the tight sites and large ceiling heights.
The floor plan is split in two by a service core containing storage, stairs and washrooms. Facing the street are two living rooms, a lower ‘public’ living room and the upper ‘private’ living room. To the rear three rooms, a kitchen and two bedrooms are stacked on top of each other, all facing out toward an external lightwell garden. In order to achieve the height requirements, the kitchen has been recessed 1200mm into the ground. This subtle level shift defines separation between the rooms whilst retaining a sense of openness.
